Corporate speak: “multiplex your issues to create a sequential effort”. What!!?? It’s TERRIBLE in marketing; it’s terrible for boardroom because it enables fearful people to avoid speaking the truth. This picture, from “The Relationship Economy” only leaves out that it is actually useful: in Training! …. and it applies to the Body as well as the Brain as I will explain
Sooo…the international heads of a large non-profit group met at our house last week to plan for the next year. They came from all over the planet and were concerned with their day-to-day problems, very much on a survival level. Their ‘leader’ was from outside, and wrote their concerns down on large pieces of paper, translating them into ‘action items’ that were similar to the corporate speak example I made up in the first sentence. The phrases had to be retranslated back to their own problems.
Rethinking their own problem in different words was painful. It was disorienting, but the reaction was “We really got a lot done!” Each person was able to see the problem in a new light…but it took breaking the old pattern, the old words, in a sometimes painful and irritating manner. Now more could be accomplished by seeing their problem from another angle.
So fitness or muscular traning?….Well back in the 1960s Joe Weider, an absolute genius in the muscle-building world, invented a ton of the concepts we use now, such as Muscle Confusion to achieve incredible results from his trainees. Today we use his principles in fitness, strength, and endurance training, in one form or another.
Basically, it’s the same thing as corporate-speak….juuusst when you think you finally accomplish a [technique, method, physical stress], we give you a different way of performing the same stress; a different move or speed. This ‘confuses’ the brain and neuromuscular response and new neural pathways are learned, keeping the old ones in place. This adds increased capability in the endeavour.
It’s not much of a stretch to apply this even to your habits. Here’s a good example: look at your pants in the morning, realize how you put them on. Reverse your habit…put on the other leg first. Tough isn’t it. What did you find out….probably a lot more than you thought you would…you’re not symmetrical, it was uncomfortable, but your body realized something new. Now do that with other things in your life! G’day mates!
