How is the water we drink
affecting our lives?
By Dr. Richard Pruett, DDS.
The earth is approximately 70 percent water and when we are born we are approximately 70 percent fluid. From there we slowly get more and more dehydrated until most of us will finally die from dehydration. Dehydration causes our organs to stop functioning properly.
The 100 trillion cells in the human body are bathed in a nutrient-filled fluid matrix called the biological terrain; other names for this fluid include the “interstitial matrix” and the “internal milieu.” This environment feeds and nourishes all of the cells in the body. The outermost wall of every cell is called the cell membrane; this membrane is permeable, which means that certain elements can flow in and out. The cells absorb electrolytes, vitamins, enzymes, and fluid in very specific amounts. These nutrients are then used by the cell to maintain cellular health and create substances called energy-rich intermediates. These substances are then used by the body to produce energy in the form of ATP. ATP is the energy that fuels many critical reactions within the human body. The waste products from these cellular reactions within the cells are then released back into the biological terrain for proper filtering and disposal by the body. The integrity of the cell, its cell membrane, and the vitality of the biological terrain increase the probability that the cell will grow and thrive, or not!
This fluid, matrix environment travels throughout the body. The strengths and weaknesses, as well as the imbalances, of this interstitial terrain can become an integral part of blood, saliva, lymph, and urine formations—these bodily fluids, therefore, may serve as mirrors or indicators of what is happening at the deepest cellular level.
The biological terrain or interstitial cellular environment has many vital functions; its primary, or number one, responsibility is to deliver nutrients to every cell in the body. These substances include electrolytes, enzymes, vitamins, minerals, hormones, and water. The second important function of the biological terrain is to transport energy-rich substances throughout the body for the production of energy, or ATP, and the third function of the biological terrain involves the movement of minerals from the cells. Because nearly every cellular reaction requires the proper levels of minerals, this function is essential to maintaining life and vitality, not only within the cells but throughout the entire body.
Does the food you eat give you all the nutrients that you need? Do the nutrients get to the cells? Does the water that you drink meet the needs of your particular body? The water that you drink has a big impact on your cellular functions. The three values that are most important for assessing the biological purity of water are pH, redox, and resistivity. (This is not to be confused with testing water for contaminants.) The question is, how will your water affect your chemistry? And are you getting enough water? Instead of going into detail about how your saliva, blood, and urine are affected by your biological terrain, I will address only the water you drink for right now.
The three values that are the most important in the water we drink, and that we can test, are:
1. pH level: If your test shows that you are too acidic with a low pH, then a more alkaline water would be better for you.
2. Redox or reduction/oxidation potential: To say it more simply, live or dead water—does your water have free electrons to contribute to energy production?
3. Mineral ion content: Is it high or low? Which would be best for your body chemistry? For example, if your lymph is clogged or plugged up with too much junk and minerals, and if your kidneys are stressed and overworked, then you might not want to throw more stuff into the interstitial fluid and plug things up even more. How do you know what is best for you without testing? You don’t!
Some tests can test both your biological cell environment and the water that you drink. That way you can see what will be best for you.
In general, and without testing, I would like to remind everyone how important it is to drink enough water, approximately 60 ounces per day and as pure as possible, preferably without chlorine, fluoride, and other toxins. For example, for my specific individual biochemistry, I drink microstructured high pH and high redox-value water.
